Reed Graf, Author of “There’s a Mouse in My House” and “A Tale of 4 Tails,” wrote these stories for his grandchildren in his series of children’s books about Klaus, a mouse who befriends the man whose house he’s living in.

After a fun 25 years of teaching and some health issues, Reed was given the opportunity to retire somewhat earlier than planned. All the while he had been doing freelance writing work for newspapers, magazines, and trade journals. So with writing books for kiddos, Reed gets to continue doing the two things he loves. The birth of Reed Graf’s first grandchild is what inspired him to launch this series of books.

“It was like a light came on and a voice said, ‘Do it, you can DO this, man!’”

Reed’s granddaughter was born during last summer’s total solar eclipse, and she was the brightest star in the sky. He loves her and her mother and father – an orthopedic resident at MCW Froedtert – so much that he was determined to write these stories, pulling all-nighters at Aurora St. Luke’s when he couldn’t sleep.

“I wanted to have something to give to my granddaughter in case I didn’t make it through.”

Reed Graf has had a mouse in his house too!! One summer night watching TV on the screened-in porch a long time ago, this mouse showed up on a shelf and joined him watching the ten o’clock news. And he did this for the rest of the summer/early fall. Reed named him Klaus . . . and now he’s the star of the show.

Reed Graf’s favorite part of the publishing process was, by far, working with the illustrators and hoping he could somehow get the images from his head into their heads… AND IT HAPPENED!

“The words didn’t worry me so much, but we agreed that for kids the art HAD to be amazing, and it is!”

There are 4 books in the “Klaus the Mouse” series and 2 in “The Babies of Underpants Avenue” . . . with more to come.
